How Hard Is Army Ranger School Really?

There are many articles describing BUD/S here on this website, but today, we're going to look at the Army's Special Forces training.  Army Ranger School is one of the world's most challenging and prestigious military training programs. It's a grueling 62-day course that pushes students to their limits, testing their physical and mental toughness, leadership skills, and ability to work under extreme stress.

Physical Demands

Ranger School is notoriously demanding, with students facing:

  • Extreme physical conditioning: Students are required to perform strenuous exercises, obstacle courses, and endurance tests, often with minimal rest and food.
  • Weight loss and fatigue: The intense physical activity and limited rations can lead to significant weight loss and exhaustion.
  • Injuries and illnesses: The risk of injury or illness is high, and students may be forced to continue training despite physical setbacks.

Mental Challenges

Ranger School is designed to break students mentally, pushing them to their limits and beyond. Students face:

  • Sleep deprivation: Students often get minimal sleep, sometimes going 48 hours or more without rest.
  • Stress and anxiety: The constant pressure to perform, coupled with the uncertainty of the training environment, can be overwhelming.
  • Leadership challenges: Students are placed in leadership roles, where they must make quick decisions and lead their teams in high-stress situations.

Dropout Rate

The dropout rate for Ranger School is high, with an average of 50-60% of students failing to complete the course.  The BUD/S failure rate of those selected to show up in Coronado can be as high as 90%. This is due to the extreme physical and mental demands for both programs and the high standards for performance and leadership.

Phases of Ranger School

Ranger School is divided into three phases, each designed to test students in different ways:

  • Darby Phase: This phase focuses on physical conditioning, obstacle courses, and combat skills.
  • Mountain Phase: Students learn mountaineering skills, including climbing, rappelling, and survival techniques.
  • Florida Phase: This phase simulates jungle warfare, with students learning survival skills, patrolling, and combat tactics.

Graduation and Rewards

Upon completing Ranger School, students earn the coveted Ranger Tab and are awarded the Ranger Badge. They also gain:

  • Elite status: Rangers are considered among the most elite soldiers in the US Army.
  • Leadership opportunities: Rangers are often selected for leadership positions and special operations units.
  • Increased pay and benefits: Rangers receive additional pay and benefits, including hazardous duty pay and special duty assignment pay.

Conclusion

Army Ranger School is an extraordinary challenge that pushes students to their limits and beyond. Only the most dedicated, resilient, skilled soldiers can complete the course and earn the coveted Ranger Tab. If you're considering Ranger School, be prepared for the ultimate test of endurance.
