If you know anything about the Navy SEALs, you probably know that it's one of the most exclusive military units in the world because of its insanely rigorous training.
But where do Navy SEALs train? And why do they train there?
We'll answer those questions and more in this article. Keep reading to learn more.
What Is a Navy SEAL?
The Navy SEALs are a special operations force in the US Navy. They get their name from executing missions in the sea, air, and on land.
They take part in several different kinds of missions, like performing reconnaissance missions on enemies, participating in high-danger missions against terrorist groups, and engaging in direct assaults and raids on targets.
They undergo some of the most rigorous and intense tests known to man, so more than 80% of recruits end up dropping out before graduating.
Where Do Navy SEALs Train?
To become a member of the highly-esteemed Navy SEALs, they must attend and graduate from something known as Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) school. They must also take a basic parachutist course as well as the SEAL Qualification Training program.
Overall, members will spend over a year trying to become a Navy SEAL.
BUD/S training takes place in Coronado, California. Although most know San Diego for its beautiful climate, pristine beaches, and tourist attractions, San Diego residents know that it is also a world-famous training ground for the US military.
There are several aspects of the beach that also contribute to Navy SEAL training.
Coronado has great weather year-round, making it ideal for outdoor training at all times throughout the year. The icy-cold water of the Pacific Ocean also makes it a tough test for trainees to overcome (causing many to quit).
The beach that Navy SEALs train on is called the Golden Strand. This beach has thick sand that makes it difficult for trainees to run through while equipped with combat boots.
How Difficult Is Navy SEAL Training?
Becoming a Navy SEAL is incredibly difficult. They are pushed to their absolute limits in order to make it.
In the first stages of training, they are pushed into physical and mental drills to test their readiness. This involves swimming tests, obstacle courses, and activities to test teamwork.
Next, they undergo "Hell Week." They are pushed to perform operational tasks for more than 20 hours a day. This allows them to work at peak physical and mental performance and forces them to show the highest level of commitment and dedication to their team and to the program.
Finally, they spend a long time on advanced tactical training. If they are able to complete each stage of Navy SEAL training, they are rewarded with entrance to one of the most prestigious military units in the world.
